USS Firebolt is a painting commissioned by Timothy J. Orth, the Commanding Officer of the ship. This coastal patrol vessel provides naval support and is based in Bahrain, an island between Qatar and Saudi Arabia in the Persian Gulf.
The Commander gave me a fair amount of artistic license with suggestions for a Gulf sunset (orange rather than pink), the Bahrain skyline (using his photos, I painted the Bahrain World Trade Center and an unusual building), EEH letters (awards won in the past year), and the Command at Sea Pin. I learned Bahrain was once a tropical paradise known for palm trees. I included a date palm near the cityscape. What a fun painting experience!
